A Message From Byron Holland
PRESIDENT & CEO, CIRA

As an organization, CIRA has grown and matured over time — in a lot of ways mirroring the evolution of the Internet itself.

To a great degree, the evolution and growth of the Canadian Internet Registration Authority has mirrored what the Internet itself has done in terms of its life stages. A little over 10 years ago, we started off as a new, young company and, very much like the Internet, we have matured over time. Today, we’re going through an interesting phase as we transition from that startup to a larger more mature organization.

When we began, the focus here was on putting in place the building blocks of technology that would enable this exciting new communications medium. Our first employees were pioneers blazing a previously uncharted path. Today, as this annual report says, the Internet has become the very operating system for our lives and it is an essential underpinning of any modern economy. The infrastructure we operate is vitally important. And we take very seriously our stewardship of the dot-ca domain space on behalf of all Canadians.

As incredible and integral to our lives as the Internet has already become, the future uses to which it will be put are even more unimaginable. But we know they are sure to be even more central to how we all communicate, interact, work and play. So our role at CIRA can only become even more indispensable.

As we carry on down this path, we are committed to consulting closely with all our stakeholders in Canada – our Members, all dot-ca domain name holders and others who have a stake in this responsibility of ours. We are also committed to continuing a record of close cooperation with, and support of, the international Internet community. Canada has a strong voice defending the interests of Canadians and weighing in on the critical issues that determine how this infrastructure continues to be operated.
