July 24 – Rocky Mountain House, AB – Today the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) and the Wild Rose School Division announced that the D-Zone DNS Firewall has been deployed board-wide. This new service helps secure students, teachers, and administration with a flexible and affordable layer of protection against ransomware, malware and other malicious content.

Key facts

  • CIRA’s D-Zone DNS Firewall is a cloud service that helps school boards block access to phishing sites and those distributing ransomware and other malware.
  • In cases when malware finds its way into the network via a BYOD or physical means such as an infected USB stick, the DNS Firewall can block its command and control to stop it from executing. Standardized reports allow administrators to see problems so that they can quarantine infected devices.
  • This firewall service extends to any device using the school network. This helps the Wild Rose School Division deliver network services beyond the administrative office and individual schools to give students a safe always-online experience. This includes completing homework while commuting on a Wi-Fi enabled school bus.
  • The D-Zone DNS Firewall is designed for organizations inside Canada and is well peered/connected to the network infrastructure that schools use. In addition to firewall functionality, it delivers a faster and more secure recursive DNS for a better browsing experience and allows filtering of content appropriate to the age of the students.
  • Special pricing is available to make this protection easy to implement across the Canadian educational sector, including K-12 school boards and higher education institutions.

Executive quotes

“Ransomware and similar cyber-attacks are wreaking havoc among public institutions like schools and universities,” says Dave Chiswell, VP of product development at CIRA. “Contributing to a stronger and safer Canadian internet is part of CIRA’s goals. A cloud-based firewall solution that offers tremendous value and can scale with the needs of the student body is part of that strategy.”

“We’re responsible to deliver a safe and secure network that connects students and educators no matter where they are,” said Jaymon Lefebvre, Director, IT Services” This requires effective security and not black box solutions that can’t dynamically scale with our future plans or policy changes. CIRA’s D-Zone DNS Firewall and their unique commitment to Canada’s educational backbone networks makes it a great choice our schools.”
