CIRA is governed by a board of 12 elected directors and three board advisors who help advance CIRA’s development. They provide strategic direction and oversight to help more Canadians get online with a .CA domain, reinvest in the development of a trusted internet for Canadians, strengthen our non-.CA product offerings and be a leading-edge, inclusive workplace that attracts and maintains top talent.

We’re looking for people who share this vision to fill a few vacant seats on the board.

The best candidates have the right skills to help CIRA advance its mission and take its work to the next level. They are professionals, and understand, above all else, that the role of the CIRA board of directors is to represent the corporation.

It is important to note that positions on CIRA’s board are not considered entry-level. It is imperative that all board members have a solid understanding of the duties and responsibilities of directors and board governance in the not-for-profit and/or the for-profit sectors.

Board members are remunerated for their time and reimbursed for expenses.

Eligibility

To be eligible to become a board director, an individual must:

  • consent to be a nominee, a candidate and, if elected, a board director
  • on the day election period begins (September 25, 2024), meet the “qualification” requirements defined in subsection 3.03 of CIRA’s By-law No. 1.

Time commitment

Elected board members serve three-year terms. During this time they’re expected to serve on committees and attend at least five board meetings and the AGM in September. Board members must also be available for a two-day board meeting in early November. The minimum time commitment to perform board and committee duties is approximately 10 to 15 hours per month equaling to around 15 business days per year.

Board seats available

  • Three from the nomination committee slate
  • One from the member slate

There are two ways for eligible, qualified and interested individuals to join the board of directors. Each slate has a different application process, deadlines, and requirements.

Individuals applying through the nomination committee slate are not required to be a member of CIRA. CIRA members who apply and do not successfully become a candidate on the nomination committee slate can also apply to join through the member slate. Candidates cannot appear on both slates.

More about the different slates

Nomination Committee Slate

When joining through the nomination committee slate, you’re applying to be reviewed and selected by a committee whose role is to ensure balanced representation on the election ballot.

Member Slate

When joining through the members’ slate you’re applying as a CIRA member who is nominating themself for other members to endorse to appear on the election ballot.

Transparency is fundamental to CIRA

As a non-profit that engages with a number of stakeholder groups across Canada's internet, CIRA believes that transparency is essential to good governance.
