With a new security breach making the news almost daily, a recent story in ITBusiness.ca highlights the popularity of ransomware in the hacker’s playbook.

Using data from Enigma Software, ITBusiness.ca mapped the impact of ransomware across Canada showing just how widespread this issue has become. While businesses are increasingly protecting their networks, the rise of BYOD and shadow IT brings with it a whole new threat that many companies are unprepared to deal with.

Unlike your typical Bond villain, most ransomware hackers don’t go for global headlines, they keep their demands low enough to ensure they get paid. While a high profile case may see a ransom demand in the tens of thousands, the average ransomware demand now only $679. This puts every small businesses, startup, and freelancer at risk.
