THE PROJECT
The First Nations Technology Council (FNTC) is an Indigenous-led not-for-profit that works to ensure that Indigenous peoples in BC have the tools, education, and support to thrive in the digital age. To address the widening digital divide seen in Indigenous communities and the broader discussion of the rights and well-being of Indigenous people, FNTC created an Indigenous Digital Equity Strategy. FNTC’s starting point is that a strategic, coordinated approach is needed to overcome systemic discrimination and the policy and regulatory roadblocks that are preventing digital equity from becoming a reality.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
The aim of the project is a world where Indigenous Peoples own, create and utilize digital technologies in the exercise of their inherent rights and in alignment with their unique worldviews, and where all Indigenous people equitably contribute to, participate in and benefit from all digital technology. The Strategy has reached a number of unintended and indirect beneficiaries including telecom service providers, non-Indigenous digital equity organizations, people working in colonial government departments and ministries and research organizations.
