THE PROJECT

STEAM PEI is a non-profit organization with the mission to inspire the youth of PEI to explore science, technology, engineering, art and math by fostering their curiosity and confidence through fun and hands-on learning opportunities such as after-school programs, camps and workshops. Recognizing that cyberbullying and online safety are concerns for children spending increasingly more time online, STEAM PEI developed a series of after-school and weekend classes for students at 13 schools across the province, as well as six professional development workshops for teachers and virtual information sessions for parents to help them learn to safeguard their children online.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

More than 200 students in grades 4-6 participated in the classes, reporting increased awareness and understanding of cyber threats, privacy, cyberbullying, AI, and enhanced interest and knowledge in the cybersecurity career field. In fact, one student who attended the program enjoyed it so much he now comes to STEAM PEI regularly to keep developing his digital skills. 80% of teachers expressed their increased confidence and excitement to share technologies and their new digital literacy skills with their classes. Parents who attended the sessions expressed that they felt more empowered to make well-informed choices about their children’s online environments, suggesting a lasting impact on their children’s online safety.
