The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (“CIRA” or “We”) is committed to the privacy of our end users. This Privacy Policy describes the policies and procedures for the Canadian DNS Firewall service (the “Service”) operated by CIRA. It describes how we collect, use, share, and secure the information collected from you when you use the Service. In this Privacy Policy, references to “you” and “your” refers to end users of the Service. This Privacy Policy is incorporated into and subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Service.
The privacy of users of the Service is very important to CIRA. We are committed to maintaining the confidentiality, integrity and security of the information of the users of the Service. CIRA will not sell, rent, or license your personal information to any third party.
Types of Data We Collect
The Service automatically collects certain information related to your use of the Service and your network usage, as set out below.
IP Address and Domain Name Queries
When you use the Service, we collect your IP (internet protocol) address, and your domain name queries. IP addresses may represent individual persons or devices, or they may represent large groups of end users within an organization. Your IP address will be retained by CIRA for up to fourteen (14) days for reporting purposes.
In the event CIRA observes behaviours which CIRA deems to be malicious or anomalous, CIRA may utilize more detailed logging to collect more specific IP address data in the course of normal network defense and mitigation. This collection and transmission will be limited to IP addresses that CIRA determines are involved in the event.
Device Data
We collect information pertaining to your device model, storage capacity and operating systems for troubleshooting and to improve the Service. This data does not include unique device identifiers.
Connection Data
We collect information about your network connection (Wi-Fi or Cellular) to understand how the Service impacts your Internet connection and to improve the Service.
Performance and Usage Data
We collect information pertaining to the data tonnage transferred, cached and the internet locations your device has accessed to understand how the Service impacts your data performance and to improve the Service.
Application Diagnostics and Crash Reports
We use this information for troubleshooting and to improve the Service. The information we receive is fully anonymized and cannot be tied back to individual users.
Problem Reports and Debugging Information
When you submit a Problem Report, we require you to provide your email address. You can choose whether to share extra debugging information, such as your device name and IP address, when submitting the Problem report. We use this information for troubleshooting and to improve the Service. Your email address is never shared with any third parties or advertisers.
Sharing of Data
CIRA is committed to the privacy of our users and will never sell, rent or license your personal information to any third party.
CIRA may share high level anonymized data on specific domains queries (including records such as threat type, domain, timestamp, geolocation, number of hits, first seen, last seen) with its threat intelligence partners. CIRA may also share IP addresses involved in malicious behaviour with its threat intelligence partners. CIRA may also share high level anonymized aggregate statistics, including metrics on threat location, geolocation, sector, as well as other vertical metrics including performance of the Service (e.g. number of threats blocked, infrastructure uptime) with the public and with its threat intelligence partners.
Updates to Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated by CIRA from time to time for any reason. We will notify you of any changes to this Privacy Policy by posting the new Privacy Policy on our website, which will come into effect as soon as it is posted. You are advised to consult this Privacy Policy regularly for any changes.
