For the second edition of the new Canadians Connected event series, we jumped from the West Coast to the East Coast to bring together Canadian internet aficionados and CIRA members at Cable Wharf—a picturesque venue on Halifax’s historic waterfront.
What was carried in on the ocean breeze this evening? Learning, networking, cocktails, delicious seafood and a pop-up shopping experience highlighting local .CA businesses—and of course, a boatload engaging talks and thoughtful conversations.
Before the event kicked off, attendees heard from United Way Halifax’s Nicole Cameron, who shared insights into the devastating wildfires impacting Nova Scotia. She highlighted the importance of collective support and unveiled CIRA and United Way’s joint fundraiser to provide aid and relief to those impacted. CIRA matched all donations received at the event and continued the campaign online for a week post-Canadians Connected: Halifax. Thanks to your generosity, CIRA contributed $5,000 to the United Way Halifax Wildfire Recovery Appeal. Your contributions and ongoing support are making a truly positive impact on the lives of those impacted.
Next, Charles Noir, Vice President of Community Investment, Policy & Advocacy at CIRA, introduced the theme of the evening: internet resilience. Charles provided an update on CIRA’s pivotal role in creating a safe, reliable and trusted internet for all Canadians. He also shed light on the significance of internet resilience in response to recent challenges like the Nova Scotia wildfires. These unfortunate events remind us of the crucial role the internet plays during emergencies, enabling vital communication, information sharing, and access to emergency services. With initiatives like our Net Good program, CIRA aims to strengthen the internet and leverage it for positive social and environmental impact.
Meg Beretta, Director of Digital Strategy at the Department of Cyber Security and Digital Solutions—formerly the Nova Scotia Digital Service—took the stage next as the first guest speaker. She shared her expertise on digital strategy and discussed the initiatives being undertaken to enhance internet resilience in Nova Scotia.
Another distinguished speaker at the event was John Sherwood, President of Atlantic IXPs. He discussed the importance of internet exchange points and their role in ensuring a resilient and interconnected internet infrastructure.
Throughout the evening, The Fine Tuners, a captivating East Coast band, set a relaxed and laid-back vibe. Their folky tunes were the perfect addition to the evening, adding a touch of casual charm to the event.
Attendees also had the opportunity to learn about and support local businesses at the .CA Pop-Up Shop. Four businesses were in attendance to showcase their goods and speak about why they chose .CA as the perfect online home for their ventures:
- Osha Mae: handmade, all-natural soaps, bath bombs and skincare products, crafted for a blissful self-care experience.
- Woods(wo)man Woodworking: handcrafted wooden creations from furniture pieces to home décor.
- Cheerfetti Gift Co.: perfectly curated gift boxes for every person and occasion.
- Nimbus Publishing: a unique collection of books, featuring engaging novels for readers of all ages.
The event also featured exciting prize giveaways. CIRA members had a chance to win a custom Japanese Kumiko panel crafted on-site during the event by Woods(wo)woman Woodworking, valued at over $400. Additionally, all guests had the opportunity to win gift certificates and products from the other local businesses in attendance and the Cable Wharf.
